There are many companies that have recognized the declining state of the planet and have wanted to make changes to become more eco-friendly in their corporations. Because they are trying to change their company’s ways to be better to the earth, we believe we should be supporting them. Here are some of the companies to support based on their changes for the better.
Walmart
Walmart has made eco-friendly changes in their supply chain operations, by cutting off any suppliers whose manufacturing, processing, or distribution methods contribute to vast carbon emissions. They also have committed to using their energy more efficiently in their buildings and to drive the production or procurement of renewable energy sources globally as well as powering every store with 100% renewable energy, both by the end of 2020. These commitments are said to be the equivalent of taking nearly 1.5 million cars off the road.
Etsy
Etsy is the first major online shopping destination to offset 100% of carbon emissions from shipping with their partner, 3Degrees. Every time you purchase an item on Etsy, they will balance out the carbon emissions from shipping by creating positive environmental impact. These environmental impacts include protecting forests that improve air quality and absorb carbon, sponsoring wind and solar farms that generate clean energy and replace fossil fuels, and developing greener methods for producing auto parts.
Starbucks
Starbucks is great for the sustainable coffee and tea lovers. They give customers the option of bringing in their own cup to be filled up with their favourite drink. This eliminates the need for single use cups, lids and straws. They also use recycled coffee grounds to make their coffee tables!! In addition, they are also in partnerships with numerous environmental organizations.
Coca-Cola
Coca Colas program ‘Every Bottle Back’ will ensure that plastic Coke bottles are recovered after use and remade into new bottles. AND they are beginning to partially make their bottles from plant based materials. This way it will reduce the amount of new plastic being made. They have even joined forces with their biggest competitors to drive collective action to ensure soda bottles have second, third and fourth lives through continued recycling and re-use.
Maple Leaf Foods
Through their “Not Just Little Things” commercial during the Superbowl, Maple Leaf announced that they had become the world’s first major carbon neutral food company, in order to build more trust with their consumers. Still considering Maple Leaf is primarily a meat producing company, this is a good step for them to show customers they can still eat meat without it having such a negative impact on the environment. However, refraining from meat is still the ultimate way of reducing carbon emissions.
Fast Food Restaurants
- McDonalds has announced that by 2025, all of their packaging will be recycled or from renewable sources. They have already eliminated their foam packaging.
- A&W has completely eco friendly packaging, and they were one of the first restaurants to release the “Beyond Meat” burger, which is a great plant based alternative to a beef or chicken burger.
- Yum! Brands (KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut). These companies are working on converting their restaurants to LEED certified buildings. Taco Bell also has the option to substitute meat with black beans in all of their meal options, which is a great way to help the environment.
